Welcome to Marcsplained, where natural history and filmmaking intertwine.
As a geosciences student at the University of Bonn in the late 2000s, I immersed myself in the study of invertebrate palaeontology, specifically Devonian arthropods, with my ultimate interest being the Cambrian radiation and the origin of animals.
Research projects led me down an unexpected path: the world of film technology. The skills I had honed in the lab — advanced imaging, 3D modeling, data analysis — translated surprisingly well to the realm of filmmaking.
Today, I find myself in a unique position, straddling the worlds of science and cinema. As the manager of Cyprus’s only robotic motion control film studio, I bring the precision and methodical approach of a scientist to the creative chaos of film production.
I operate high-speed Phantom cameras, capturing moments that occur too quickly for the human eye to perceive. I develop custom robotic rigs that move cameras in ways that seemed impossible just a few years ago, allowing us to tell stories from entirely new perspectives. I connect industrial robots to Unreal Engine for real-time control of virtual worlds. It’s a perfect fusion of the physical and digital realms, allowing us to bridge the gap between imagination and reality.
This website, Marcsplained, is where these two passions converge. As a scientist, I was giving lectures and popularising very esoteric topics in palaeontology, natural history, zoology, and evolution. As a filmmaker, my work takes me down weird engineering paths. Might as well share all of this knowledge and experience in case someone out there has similar interests.
